HIM Screamworks Advert Analysis

Advert Analysis
HIM, Screamworks

This is the advert poster for the HIM album 'Screamworks'. This is a more typical styled image for a rock band as it has the front-man in the centre of the image. This is common as in most videos and images the focus tends to be on the singers and front-men. Also the image uses more darker dull colours in the background and at the side. Also by colouring the singer in black and white it creates a contrast with the background that makes the singer standout a bit more. This adds more focus to the image of the singer. This is also comon as there are rarely advertisements for rock bands which contain brighter more vibrant colours. That seems to be a more common trait of pop or indie rock music.
The advert promotes the band quite well as in the top left hand corner of the screen there is the band logo. This is a common trait of the band and is displayed in all of their albums and most of their videos so this would make it easier for their audience to identify their work.

Digipak Analysis

Metallica Death Magnetic

This is the digipak for the special edition version of the Metallica album ‘Death Magnetic’. The cover of the album is quite basic as it shows an outline of a coffin in the center with what appear to iron filings around it in some sort of magnetic field. This symbolizes the album title well as the coffin signifies death and the iron filings symbolize the magnetism or the ‘Magnetic’ aspect of the title. Upon opening the digipak you can see the overall colour scheme of the album. The colours are dark and grungy which is common of most rock/metal albums. Upon closer inspection it can be seen that the booklet for the album has the center of the pages cut out to show the coffin image on the final page. This is slightly annoying as by doing this the centres of the pages containing some of the lyrics have been removed.
I think that this album is more focused towards a mainstream audience due to the amount of campaigning and advertisements that were released for the album and that also the presentation and style of the digipak is a much different concept than some of the albums they have released in the past.

Music Video Nine Frame Analysis

Music Video Shot Count Task

'Velvet Revolver - Slither'

For this task I was supposed to perform a count of the amount of shots used within a music video of my choice. I chose this music video for 'Velvet Revolver - Slither'. I counted approximately 212 shots used within the video. Theses ranged from close up shots to jump cuts. There is a lot of emphasis on the different band members when the song reaches a section specific to their part. This means that when the song has a stronger rhythm section the camera will focus more on the rhythm guitarist and during stronger lead or vocal sections the camera will focus on the lead guitarist or the singer. There is also a strong sense of voyeurism within the video as there are various shots of female dancers, This adds to the male gaze aspect which can be found in a lot of rock and metal videos.

Pixelated Self Portrait

For this task I was meant to take an image of myself and create a simple pixelated 8 bit recreation of it. The first stage of the task was to create the various layers needed to edit the image. These included those such as outline, Hair/highlights and face/highlights. I then used the marquee tool and traced around the outline and filled it with the paint bucket tool. I then used this method and traced over all of my features within the picture.
